From Cannulas to Dinosaur Races: Why You Should Choose a Rural Placement in Longreach

More than 10 years ago, I first visited Longreach with my family, and I still remember being amazed to see a huge Qantas plane in the middle of the outback.

When I found out I would be returning for my Year 4 rural medicine placement, I couldn't have been more excited. My placement was an incredible experience. I was mentored by an outstanding team of doctors who gave me plenty of hands-on learning. I became the go to student for cannulas, scrubbed in with fly in ophthalmology surgeons for cataract surgeries, saw my own patients in the Emergency Department, and assisted with procedures at the Longreach Family Medical Practice.

Outside of medicine, I loved becoming part of the community. I can now proudly say I am officially the third fastest dinosaur in Queensland after competing in the inflatable dinosaur race in Muttaburra. I also joined the weekly run club and finally won trivia at the local tavern in my last week. The people in Longreach were some of the friendliest I've ever met, and the strong sense of community made the placement even more special.

This placement gave me a new appreciation for rural medicine and the unique opportunities you won't find anywhere else. I am looking forward to continuing my rural journey with a 12-week placement in Mount Isa next year.
