Overview

The Knowledge Assessment is the first stage of the three-part new supervisor training program. The purpose of the online knowledge assessment is to provide you with the background theoretical and content knowledge required for you to become competent as a professional/clinical supervisor. This is a foundation knowledge course that focuses on attaining minimum competency in supervision skills. The course is equal to 24 hours of active continuing professional development.

 Learning Outcomes

Participants who successfully complete Part 1 will develop knowledge in these key competency areas:

1. learning models and teaching engagement strategies
2. clinical supervision
3. ethical, legal and organisational practice
4. cultural and social diversity
5. reflective practice and giving and receiving feedback
6. evaluation and assessment of psychological competencies

Teaching Methods and Evaluation

Part 1 is a self-paced course that includes readings, reflections, videos and activities for six learning modules. Part 1 is completed through the JCU online learning portal, LearnJCU. Access to LearnJCU will be provided within one week of registration being confirmed. You will be required to successfully complete a reflective assessment at the end of each module. You will be able to sit the assessment as many times as you need to reach a passing grade. You will create your own personalised Supervisors Toolkit, an individualised resource that you can draw from as a new supervisor.

Successful Completion

To successfully complete the Knowledge Assessment, you will need to:

1. successfully complete each of the six topics (competency areas) in sequential order, including the successful completion of an assessment task at the end of each topic. Please note you will need a competent or higher grade to move onto the next topic. 
2. successfully develop a Supervisor's Toolkit. This toolkit will be developed as you progress through the topics. The Supervisor's Toolkit is submitted at the completion of the final topic.

Overview

The purpose of the Part 2 skills workshop training is to integrate (and apply) the learning from the Part 1 in a supportive environment with peers. You will need to successfully complete Part 1 before registering in this training workshop. Selection of your Part 2 workshop can be made on the training calendar page (linked below) after your registration has been confirmed.

Teaching Methods and Evaluation

The Part 2 Skills Training workshop is a 16-hour workshop that places an emphasis on skill development. It is delivered either as a two-day face-to-face workshop or 4 x 4-hour online live VC workshop using Zoom. It will consist of a mix of didactic presentation, skills practice, role plays, case studies/vignettes, group discussions, and reflective activities.

Successful Completion

To successfully complete the Part 2 Skills Training, you will need to:

1. attend all sessions of the workshop, including activities throughout the workshop.
2. complete an online assessment that will include an updated Supervisor's Toolkit, written responses to the case studies, and reflection tasks.

Overview

The purpose of the Competency Assessment is to assess the knowledge and skills gained throughout the training in an applied situation. Supervisors will be assessed against the minimum competency standards required to effectively supervise. As self-assessment of supervisory skills and reflective practice are important skills for a professional/clinical supervisor, emphasis is placed on the self-reflective component of this evaluation task.

Teaching Methods and Evaluation

This evaluation will consist of a video of a supervision session, with a self-evaluation and self-reflection task also being completed. You will need access to a supervisee. If this is not possible for you, please email supervisortraining@jcu.edu.au after registration and we will support you to access a supervisee for this task. Your supervisee will also be asked to provide feedback on your supervision.

Learning Outcomes

Participants who successfully complete Part 3 will develop competency in these key areas:

1. application of supervisory skills and knowledge in practice
2. application of reflective practice through the experience of self-assessment of supervisor skills and reflection on practice
3. receiving feedback on your supervision practice

Successful Completion

1. Evaluation will consist of a submitted video of a supervision session, with a self-evaluation and self-reflection task also being completed. All components will be reviewed and assessed by an experienced supervisor.
2. The skill of receiving feedback will be assessed through the integration of supervisee feedback (on your supervision) in your self-reflection task.
